Within the last couple of years, Americans have experienced a massive renewal of interest in politics and the workings of government. More and more people have begun to get involved in the political process. One result of this renaissance in political activity is that Americans are more aware than ever that all is not well in Washington. And the more corruption and greed Americans see, the more they want the system to change.
All across America, citizens are meeting together at kitchen tables and on town squares to talk about the ideals our Founding Fathers espoused, and to try to shape our current bloated, lethargic, and unresponsive government into a governing process that is truly of, by, and for the people. Like the revolutionaries of old, citizens are banding together, throwing tea parties to protest the excessive political power wielded by special interests, poll results, and the Almighty dollar.
The recent surge in tea party movements across the United States serves as a testament to the American people's frustration with the status quo in Washington. But as admirable as the efforts of modern tea party movements may be, they are destined to fail over the long term. In their efforts to change the status quo, they are missing a critical component for lasting change for two reasons. First, there are as many ideas and motives behind each of these movements as there are people. As a result, they lack the essential focus to enact effective change in Washington. Second, most protest movements try to change what comes out of Washington without changing what goes on into Washington. In so doing, they're playing a political version of Whack-a-Mole, wherein the protest movement of the day may succeed in pounding its pet issue into the ground; but as soon as public attention has shifted to tomorrow's movement, it pops right back up again. And just like every other amusement park game, Washington has made playing its version of Whack-a-Mole a no-win proposition.
For many, the futility of these shortsighted efforts at beating the system into submission inevitably results in cries of frustration and anger, a cacophony of confusion and disillusionment. Yet over the rising din, one common question can be heard from the swelling numbers of political activists, "What do we do next?"
You can't win Whack-a-Mole by playing by the rules. And you can't change Washington by using Washington's rules. In order to create permanent, meaningful change in Washington, Americans need to put down the mallet and join together in clear, common purpose, to radically shift the balance of power away from a corrupt system, and to put it back in the hands of the people. A recent poll showed that more voters identify themselves as independent of any political party than at any time in the past 70 years. And the percentage is increasing. The time to act is now. The stakes have never been higher, nor the opportunity to enact real change greater.
To that end, we at America357 have developed a plan for genuine, meaningful, and lasting reform in Washington, consisting of seven principles. To develop interest and encourage participation, we're revealing our plan to reform Washington through a contest -- open to every citizen of the United States. The first person to correctly identify all seven of our guiding principles will win the grand prize.
